Chiang Mai

I didn't really know anything about Thai geography before we decided to go to Thailand so I thought that this map might be helpful in tracking our journey. We started in Bangkok which is in the center of the country and then today, we flew to the north to Chiang Mai, Thailand's second largest city.
While we had never heard about it before we started researching, once we decided to go, many people including my SIL Kelley, said it was one of their favorite cities in Thailand. We got to the airport and took an hour flight to Chiang Mai. We arrived on a Sunday, the night of the famous Walking Street street market (not an accident I might add!) We are staying at a beautiful hotel, Bodhi Serene, in the old city. The old part of Chiang Mai is surrounded by a wall and a moat. We are by the Tae Pae gate. Once we were settled in our hotel, we  decided to head out and explore and look for somewhere to eat lunch. The heat was incredible as people had warned us so the main criteria for a restaurant was air conditioning. We found a Thai place and had a pretty good lunch. If I could share one great invention with the Thai people it would be napkins. The literally have kleenex or tiny, one ply so called napkins in all restaurants. You need about 50 of them for a meal and they barely absorb anything! Anyway, we went and bought a city map at a recommended book store and then started our trek through the market. It was huge, blocks and blocks. While it was fun, it was a little overwhelming! The later it got, the more people came out until it was so packed that you could barely walk or look at anything. We did manage to purchase a few souvenirs and ended the night with iced coffee. First impression of Chiang Mai was a positive one and I look forward to exploring the city some more!
